Trophy fish. Closed December 1 - May 31 to protect spawning populations.
Large lakes and rivers with clear water and abundant vegetation. Prefer water temperatures of 60-70°F. Found in St. Lawrence River, Lake Chautauqua, and select Finger Lakes.
Most active during spring and fall. Hunt in shallow weed beds and along drop-offs. Spawn in spring (April-May) in shallow, weedy areas.
Vertical bars or spots on light background. Pointed tail lobes. Lower half of cheek and gill cover scaleless. Can exceed 50 inches and 40 pounds. Known as "fish of 10,000 casts."
