Handle carefully - sharp dorsal spines can cause painful wounds. Often considered a nuisance catch but edible.
Shallow coastal waters, bays, and estuaries. Hide under rocks, shells, and debris. Tolerate low oxygen and pollution. Common in Hudson River estuary and Long Island Sound.
Most active at night. Spawn in summer (May-August) in protected cavities. Males guard eggs and produce loud grunting sounds to attract mates.
Large, flat head with wide mouth. Mottled brown/olive coloration. Fleshy flaps on head. Sharp spines on dorsal fin (handle carefully). Makes grunting/foghorn sounds. Often caught by accident.
