Spring (April-May) spawning on rocky shoals or rivers. Summer in deeper, cooler water. Fall feeding actively. Winter catchable through ice. Best fishing spring, fall, and night.
Olive-gold body with white-tipped lower tail lobe. Large, glassy eyes. White spot on lower tail fin. Two separate dorsal fins. Canine teeth. Size 15-24 inches common, up to 30+ inches.
