Habitat & Where to Find Them

Clear, cool lakes and rivers with rocky bottoms. Prefers structure like boulders, ledges, and gravel. Found in current or near drop-offs. Depth 5-20 feet.

Seasonal Patterns & Best Times to Fish

Late spring (May-June) spawning in shallow gravel/rock nests. Summer in deeper water near structure. Fall feeding heavily. Winter deep and slow. Best fishing late spring through fall.

Identification Tips

Bronze-brown body with dark vertical bars. Red eyes. Upper jaw doesn't extend past eye. Connected dorsal fin. Prefers rocky habitat. Size 12-16 inches common, up to 20+ inches.
