Habitat & Where to Find Them

Shallow, weedy areas of lakes, ponds, and slow rivers. Prefers warm water with vegetation and soft bottoms. Found around docks, fallen trees, and weed edges. Depth 3-12 feet in summer.

Seasonal Patterns & Best Times to Fish

Late spring (May-June) spawning in shallow nests. Summer in weed beds and near structure. Fall feeding actively. Winter in deeper water with reduced activity. Best fishing late spring through summer.

Identification Tips

Deep, compressed body with blue-purple iridescence on gill covers. Dark spot on rear of dorsal fin. Small mouth. Vertical bars on sides (faint in adults). Orange-yellow breast. Size 6-10 inches common, up to 12 inches.
