Rocky and sandy bottoms, reefs, and wrecks. Depth 30-100 feet. Schools near structure. Found in Long Island Sound and Atlantic waters.
Spring (May) move inshore. Summer on reefs and structure. Fall feeding. Winter migrate offshore. Best fishing summer.
Silver body with faint vertical bars. Deep, compressed shape. Sharp dorsal spines. Small mouth with incisor-like teeth. Size 8-14 inches common, up to 18 inches.
