Rocky bottoms, reefs, and wrecks. Prefers cold water. Depth 30-200 feet. Found offshore in deeper waters.
Year-round in deep water. Winter-spring move closer to shore. Summer in deeper, cooler water. Best fishing winter and spring.
Olive-brown with spots. Three dorsal fins, two anal fins. Barbel on chin. White lateral line. Large head. Size 5-15 pounds common, up to 40+ pounds.
