Summer Flounder, commonly called Fluke in New York, is a popular flatfish prized by recreational anglers. This left-eyed flounder is a different species from Winter Flounder and has distinct seasons and regulations. Known for aggressive strikes and excellent table fare.

Sandy and muddy bottoms near structure. Ambush predator buried in sand. Depth 10-100 feet. Found in bays, harbors, and ocean.
Spring (May) move inshore. Summer in bays and coastal waters. Fall (September) begin offshore migration. Winter in deep offshore water. Best fishing summer.
Left-eyed flounder (both eyes on left side). Large mouth with sharp teeth. Olive-brown coloring with spots. Can change color to match bottom. Much larger than Winter Flounder, reaching 20+ pounds. Active predator that feeds on baitfish.
