June 23 to August 31: 16.5" minimum, 3 fish per day. September 1 to December 31: 16.5" minimum, 6 fish per day.
Rocky bottoms, reefs, wrecks, and jetties. Depth 20-100 feet. Prefers structure with hiding places. Found in Long Island Sound and Atlantic waters.
Spring (May-June) move inshore. Summer on reefs and wrecks (spawning). Fall feeding heavily. Winter migrate offshore to deeper water. Best fishing spring and fall.
Dark gray-black with blue tints. Large mouth. Dorsal fin with elongated rays. Males develop hump on head during spawning. White spots and bars. Size 12-18 inches common, up to 24 inches.
