Brown trout prefer cool, clear streams and lakes with abundant cover. Found in rivers, streams, and lakes throughout NY, especially in the Catskills, Adirondacks, and Finger Lakes. They favor deeper pools, undercut banks, and areas with structure like fallen trees or boulders.
Brown trout are active year-round but feeding patterns vary by season. Spring (April-May): Active feeding as water warms, excellent dry fly fishing. Summer (June-August): Move to cooler, deeper water during heat. Fall (September-November): Most aggressive feeding before winter, prime time for trophy fish. Winter (December-March): Slower metabolism but still catchable in deeper pools.
Golden-brown body with dark spots and red/orange spots with pale halos. Square tail. Lower jaw extends beyond upper jaw. Can grow quite large (10+ lbs in NY waters). Coloration varies by habitat - stream fish are more vibrant than lake fish.
