Rainbow trout thrive in cold, oxygen-rich waters. Common in stocked lakes, rivers, and streams across NY. Prefer areas with current and structure. Found in Lake Ontario tributaries, Catskill streams, and many stocked lakes statewide.
Rainbow trout are active year-round with seasonal patterns. Spring (April-May): Peak activity during spawning runs in tributaries. Summer (June-August): Seek cooler water, early morning/evening feeding. Fall (September-November): Aggressive feeding, excellent fishing. Winter (December-March): Slower but catchable, especially in tailwaters and spring-fed streams.
Silvery body with pink/red lateral stripe. Black spots on back, sides, and tail. Forked tail. White mouth. Typically 10-16 inches in NY, can reach 20+ inches in Lake Ontario and larger reservoirs.
