Atlantic salmon in NY are primarily found in Lake Ontario and its tributaries. They prefer deep, cold, oxygen-rich waters. Tributaries like the Salmon River are famous for fall runs. Lake fish roam open water following baitfish schools.
Atlantic salmon have distinct seasonal movements. Spring (April-May): Some fish return to tributaries. Summer (June-August): Roam Lake Ontario depths following bait. Fall (September-November): Major spawning run into tributaries, peak fishing season. Winter (December-March): Return to lake, some holdover in deeper river pools.
Silvery body with X-shaped spots above lateral line. Forked tail. Slender, streamlined body. Can reach 20-30 lbs in Lake Ontario. Fresh-run fish are bright silver, spawning fish darken with bronze/brown tones.
