Atlantic menhaden (bunker) are found in coastal waters, bays, and estuaries throughout NY. They travel in large schools near the surface. Common in Long Island Sound, Great South Bay, and along the Atlantic coast. Prefer warmer months but present year-round in southern waters.
Menhaden have seasonal migration patterns. Spring (April-May): Migrate north into NY waters. Summer (June-August): Peak abundance in bays and coastal waters, huge schools. Fall (September-November): Begin migration south. Winter (December-March): Most move south, some remain in deeper waters. Used primarily as bait for striped bass and other gamefish.
Silvery body with large head. Dark spot behind gill cover followed by several smaller spots. Deeply forked tail. Large scales. Typically 10-15 inches. Strong herring-like smell. Travels in dense schools that create surface disturbance.
