Haddock are bottom-dwelling fish found in offshore waters 100-300 feet deep. In NY, they are caught in deeper Atlantic waters off Long Island and Montauk. Prefer rocky or mixed bottom with moderate current. Schooling fish that aggregate near structure.
Haddock are available year-round but fishing varies by season. Spring (April-May): Move to shallower spawning grounds. Summer (June-August): Excellent fishing in 150-250 feet. Fall (September-November): Continue feeding heavily. Winter (December-March): Move slightly deeper, still catchable. Best fishing typically May-October in NY waters.
Dark gray back with silvery-white belly. Distinctive black lateral line. Large black spot above pectoral fin (thumbprint). Three dorsal fins, two anal fins. Barbel on chin. Typically 2-5 lbs, can reach 10+ lbs.
