Hickory shad are anadromous fish found in coastal waters and lower portions of rivers. In NY, they are caught in the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, and Atlantic coastal waters. Prefer areas with current and structure during spawning runs.
Hickory shad have spring spawning runs but are present year-round in coastal waters. Spring (April-June): Spawning run into rivers, peak fishing. Summer (July-August): Return to coastal waters. Fall (September-November): Feed actively in bays and sounds. Winter (December-March): Move to deeper coastal waters. Smaller and more aggressive than American shad.
Silvery body with greenish back. Row of dark spots behind gill cover. Deeply forked tail. Lower jaw projects beyond upper jaw. Typically 1-2 lbs, smaller than American shad. More elongated body than American shad.
