Habitat & Where to Find Them

King mackerel are pelagic  fish found in offshore and nearshore waters. In NY, they are caught off Long Island and Montauk during warmer months. Prefer water temperatures above 68°F. Follow baitfish schools along the coast and around structure.

Seasonal Patterns & Best Times to Fish

King mackerel are warm-water fish with seasonal presence in NY. Spring (April-May): Begin appearing in southern NY waters. Summer (June-August): Peak season, excellent fishing off Montauk and Long Island. Fall (September-November): Continue feeding before migration. Winter (December-March): Migrate south, rare in NY waters. Best fishing July-October.

Identification Tips

Silvery body with greenish-blue back. Lateral line drops sharply below second dorsal fin. Sharp teeth. Long, streamlined body. Typically 10-30 lbs in NY waters, can exceed 40 lbs. Distinguished from Spanish mackerel by size and lateral line shape.
