Habitat & Where to Find Them

Monkfish (goosefish) are bottom-dwelling fish found in deep offshore waters 100-500 feet. In NY, they are caught in Atlantic waters off Long Island. Prefer soft bottom (mud, sand) where they can bury themselves. Ambush predators that lie in wait for prey.

Seasonal Patterns & Best Times to Fish

Monkfish are available year-round with consistent fishing. Spring (April-May): Active feeding. Summer (June-August): Excellent fishing in deeper waters. Fall (September-November): Continue feeding. Winter (December-March): Slower but still catchable. Prized for their tail meat (poor man lobster). Best fishing typically in 150-400 feet.

Identification Tips

Enormous flattened head with huge mouth. Brown/gray mottled body. Fleshy appendage on head used as lure. Small eyes. Tiny tail relative to body. Can reach 50+ lbs. Unmistakable appearance - looks prehistoric. Only the tail is typically kept for eating.
