Pollock are found in offshore and nearshore waters over rocky bottom and structure. In NY, they are caught off Montauk and Long Island in 50-200 feet. Prefer cooler water and aggregate near wrecks, reefs, and rocky areas. Schooling fish that feed aggressively.
Pollock are available year-round with seasonal patterns. Spring (April-May): Move inshore, excellent fishing. Summer (June-August): Good fishing near structure in 80-150 feet. Fall (September-November): Peak season, aggressive feeding. Winter (December-March): Move slightly deeper, still catchable. Best fishing typically October-May in NY waters.
Greenish-brown back with silvery sides. Three dorsal fins, two anal fins. Forked tail. Protruding lower jaw. Lateral line is pale and continuous. Typically 3-10 lbs, can reach 20+ lbs. Distinguished from haddock by lack of black spot and different coloration.
